About estonia
The Republic of Estonia is a state in the Baltic region of Northern Europe with a population of about 1.3 million. The official language is Estonian, which belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family.
Estonia makes its presence felt in the region with its seaside towns, country villages, forests, and the capital city Tallinn with its medieval splendour.
Estonia has one of the highest Internet penetration rates in the world. Computerization and digital connection for people are encouraged and supported by the state.
Estonia has stood on the cultural parting line between Eastern and Western Europe for centuries. The Estonian cultural scene can be characterised by the origins which date back to the very distant past. In order to understand Estonian folk culture, it has to be recognised that this is a highly complicated and multi-layered way of existence of a small nation.
Estonian most famous composers are internationally known and respected — Rudolf Tobias, Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Lepo Sumera, Erki-Sven Tüür. Talking about well-known conductors, one should mention Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Tõnu Kaljuste, Risto Joost and Anu Tali.
One of the most amazing things in Estonia is the Song Festival (in Estonian Laulupidu). It is one of the largest amateur choral events in the world, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It is held every five years in July on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak). The Song Festival also played an important role while becoming an independent country.
Estonia shows that a country with not such a big area and population can be very successful, and even number one in the world in many fields of information technology. These achievements result from valuing education, knowledge and co-operation.
