About TALLINN
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, a Baltic country in northeastern Europe. Situated next to the Gulf of Finland, Tallinn is close to Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Stockholm. Tallinn has roughly 450.000 inhabitants and is therefore the biggest City of Estonia, which has an overall population of 1.3 Million. Estonia is part of the European Union and, since 2011, in the Eurozone.
Language and Ethnicity
The official language is Estonian, a Finno-Ugric language, currently spoken by approximately one Million people. However, 25 % of the population in overall Estonia and around 40 % of Tallinn inhabitants is part of the ethnically Russian community. This community is a Russian-speaking minority with Estonian nationality. This situation mainly results due to the occupation of Estonia through the Soviet Union, which lasted many decades and just ended 27 years ago.
Old Town
Tallinn is a charming medieval city; its roots go back to the 11th Century. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world and surrounded by a fascinating medieval town wall. Thus, Tallinn’s Old Town is a UNESCO world heritage site. During its history, different powers such as the German empire, the Swedes, Denmark and Russia influenced Tallinn. Since 1991, Estonia is an independent country, the Republic of Estonia.
Information Technology
Tallinn is internationally acclaimed for its advanced information technology. The Technical University of Tallinn is leading in this field. The company Skype was launched in Tallinn, but also other great applications such as Transferwise and Taxify have their roots here, just to name some. However, also in everyday life, the advanced development of Estonian Information Technology Development is noticeable; nearly all cafes, bars and public spaces have WIFI access for visitors. The Estonian population uses ID-cards for online signature, bank transfer, online voting, health care, etc.
Climate
Tallinn’s weather is characteristic for a northern located city. Snow can fall between October and April, while in December the daylight lasts only six hours per day. The winters are long and cold, the springs are cool and with little perception, the summers are short and moderately warm, the autumns long and rainy.

How to reach Tallinn
The Lennart Meri Airport in Tallinn is among European cities, one of the closest to a city center. Only four kilometers separate the Airport from Tallinn’s Old Town. A taxi ride will take around 10 minutes; a tram (Tram 4) will also lead you there, which just takes slightly longer to reach the city center. Several destinations are connected to Tallinn Airport through direct flights, such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Gothenburg, Istanbul, London, Milan, Paris, Munich etc. However, there is always the possibility of a connection flight.
The Harbor connects Tallinn to St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm and Mariehamn trough quick and mostly cheap fairy lines, which operate all year long.
Tallinn is very close to several other capitals, Riga is easily reachable in four hours by bus, while St. Petersburg is reached in six hours. The fairy trip to Helsinki lasts two hours. The roads are well preserved; therefore, Tallinn is easy to access from anywhere.
